Independent — Source-checked — No paid rankings
A word on the box is not proof.
We rank dog gear from worst to best using what manufacturers publish, what independent testers found and what owners keep reporting. Then we tell you what your dog actually gets for the money.
“Orthopedic” on a dog bed has no legal or technical definition. Anyone can print it on a box.
Whole Dog Journal looked into that word, and it is not the only one. A harness box can say crash tested without naming who tested it or to what standard. A bed can say clinically proven on the strength of a study with no comparison group.
Harnesses, beds, crates, leashes and toys are sold on a brand name and a promise, while the parts that decide how they hold up stay out of sight: the foam, the hardware, the seams, the fine print of the warranty.
So we look at the thing itself. What it is made of, how long it lasts, what the warranty really covers and what proof stands behind the claim.
What we cover
Five lines of enquiry, one question underneath all of them

Harnesses & Walking Gear
Harnesses, collars and leashes. How they fit, what the hardware is made of, and who tested the claims.

Beds & Crates
Foam, covers, liners and warranties. What separates a bed that holds its shape from one that goes flat.

Toys & Chews
What “tough” means on a label, and what happens when your dog gets through it anyway.

Rankings
Brands ranked worst to best on quality, durability, fit, safety and value. Where a product is made only breaks ties.

Dog Welfare
The dog’s side of the purchase. When gear may be the problem, and when the right call is your vet.
How we work
Three rules we do not bend
Rankings are not for sale
Nobody gets to buy a position in a ranking or the softening of a verdict. Affiliate links and sponsored pieces are always labelled.
Named sources, checkable claims
Every factual claim traces back to a manufacturer statement, a published study or a primary document. Where we are giving an opinion, we say so.
The dog is the client
The question is what your dog actually receives for the money: fit, comfort, durability and safety over years rather than weeks.
Every video takes one product category and ranks what is really worth buying
For owners who would rather buy once.
